Meet the author

Kally J. Baptist won the 2015 We Need Diverse Books short story contest.“My favorite authors growing up were Mildred D. Taylor, Walter Dean Myers, Richard Peck, Donald J. Sobol, Jacqueline Woodson, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, and Christopher Paul Curtis.

I’ve since added Sonya Sones, Meg Medina, Angie Thomas, Matt de la Pena, and Kwame Alexander to this list.

Reading voraciously (which means a WHOLE lot) helped enhance my ability to craft my own stories. Writing takes passion and commitment; I did it for years just for the love of it.”

Meet the main characters....

EB:

Ebony lives with Granny and her older sister, Poke

...and Poke's 2 year old son, Jaren

...and Eb's little sister, Aubrey and brother, Courtney

...and sometimes her cousin Tyree livers there too, when he's not in trouble.

Flow:

Flow lives with his ma

...and his older brother Cas

...and his seven year old sister, Myesha.

Uncle Reggie owns a garage where Flow helps out sometimes.

De'Kari is a boy who goes by the name of Flow;

all he wants to do is swim.

Both of their dads are away in the Army

EB & Flow get in a fight in the cafeteria at school. They get suspended for 10 days. These are their stories, told in their voice. Their story is more than just the words on the page.

Their lives may seem different from yours. Or they may seem familiar. One thing we can all learn, is that everyone's story is not what it seems.
