Pilot Takes Learning to New Heights
American Airlines Pilot Captain Shawn Bowden stopped by Alicia Koepke's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) class to share his story with Chippewa Middle School students.
Mr. Bowden studied aviation flight and aviation management at Southern Illinois University and has been a pilot for 20 years.
Mr. Bowden was a student/private pilot for 4 years, he served as a United States Army pilot for 10 years, and he has worked as an airline pilot for 6 years.
The students learned that becoming an airline pilot requires between 1,500-5,000 hours of flight training, and they learned about the specific skills required for the job.
The students saw a picture of a cockpit and Mr. Bowden explained all of the instruments he uses and the importance of each one.
Mr. Bowden also demonstrated his initial welcome and take off messages he recites before leaving and arriving at airports.
He wrapped up his presentation by showing the students all of the flights he took in 2024, pointing out the flight paths from one airport to another.
The students were excited to hear his stories, as well as take pictures with him after the presentation.
Some of the students in the class are interested in becoming a pilot and were inspired by Mr. Bowden's story.
