STEM Students Prepare for a Mission to Mars

Chippewa Middle School seventh grade students in STEM Teacher Ms. Alicia Koepke's class were tasked with building a rocket and successfully landing it on Mars.

The students first learned what their mission, challenge, strategy and goals were to successfully complete this assignment.

Using the 3D modeling computer program TinkerCAD, they had to build a lander capsule, adding legs and thrusters to the capsule, and then finally constructing a door.

Working with a partner, the students had to think carefully about the materials they needed to use to build their capsule and had the freedom to design it anyway they would like.

During the building process some of the students started with cylinders and triangles, while others used stars and even a whale.

Some students added two legs to their capsule, while others added more.

After they completed their lander, they selected one of five environments it would land in on Mars.

The students are excited to continue their work on their landers next week and to see if they will be able to successfully land it on Mars.
