Forces, Energy, Motion and an Egg
Chippewa Middle School eighth graders spent the first few weeks of school investigating how objects impact other objects.
Eighth Grade Science Teacher Ms. Caitlin Hatta said this series of physics lessons engage students in discoveries about forces, energy and motion.
Students showcased their knowledge at the end of this unit by applying Newton's Third Law to designing and developing a working prototype that involves the motion of two colliding objects.
Students were given a budget, an egg and the force of gravity.
On the day of the egg drop the students weighed their creation without the egg to get a precise weight. They then used that information on the sheet they were recording each of the egg drops on.
The first drop was at a lower height on the ladder. Only a few of the eggs survived the drop from that distance.
The eggs that didn't crack at that height had another chance of being dropped from the top of the ladder. Only one of the eggs in this class survived the drop from that height.
They very much enjoyed their egg drop experience.
