Ms. Becka Shipp, the Assistant Director of the City of Des Plaines Public Works and Engineering Department, visited Ms. Alicia Koepke's 6th grade STEM class at Chippewa Middle School.

Ms. Shipp explained to students what civil engineers do and how they make sure our water, sewage and waste systems are working properly.

A civil engineer's job is to continually check the condition of all of the infrastructure in the city and decide when and how each item needs to be replaced, repaired and maintained.

She explained that the city engineer comes up with a plan for what work needs to be done and then is responsible for the design, build and repair of the infrastructure.

She presented a slide show to the class showing some of the engineering projects that the city of Des Plaines is currently working on, specifically resurfacing roads, adding new storm drains and continuing to build the city's infrastructure.

Ms. Shipp also talked about how the water comes into homes, how it is filtered and put back into the environment.

A civil engineers uses math, geometry, physics (energy, force, gravity) and other disciplines in their daily work.
